The two-cylinder engines of the series 01 are considered the first express train locomotives, which were developed according to the unit construction program The first construction lots were equipped with front wheels of 800 mm diameter and approved for 120 km/h. From 01 102 onwards, the gauge wheels of 1,000 mm and reinforced brakes were used, enabling the maximum speed permitted to be increased to 130 km/h. The DR retained its original design with the large Wagner smoke deflectors and the air and feed pumps in the smoke chamber niches after World War 2.After the war, the locomotive 01 226 remained with the railway company of the German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Reichsbahn).
