In order to replace the costly and personnel-intensive steam locomotives in the shunting service, the Austrian Federal Railways purchased a series of 400 HP diesel locomotives in the 2062 series from 1958 onwards. Until 1966, the Jenbacher factories in Tyrol built a total of 65 pieces of this two-axle small diesel locomotive.The locomotive was used in the transport and construction train service all over Austria with its conspicuous, cast-iron front panels, which serve as ballast weights. On the Lower Austrian branch lines, these locomotives were found in front of passenger trains with one to two wagons. The last locomotives dropped out of the normal operating service in 2003.
