Series 212 is considered a direct V 100 chassis series and was built to meet their development requirements. Only a stronger 993 kW motor was used in the machine. In service as BR V 100.20 from 1962 to 1965, in contrast to the V 100.10 used in the branch service it was also intended for the main and steep-distance service.Since an increased engine power compared to the V 100.10 proved to be functional, the front stem and the frame cover plate of the locomotives from V 100 2022 were extended from 12,100 mm to 12,300 mm.
