From 1976 to 1995, 217 pieces of the four-axle thyristor locomotives series 1044 were purchased from OeBB. The 5,120 kW strong and up to 160 km/h fast locomotives characterize the modern image of the OeBB for many years. From 2002 all 104s were equipped with a shuttle train control.
